"Title identical [to JSL3680] but after the wording of the title proper, Kunz had caused to be inserted, in pink or 'kunzite' color ink, the words 'By George Frederick Kunz, Ph.D.' Furthermore, this special issue is bound in purplish-pink, vertically ribbed cloth, gold title with author's name(!) on cover & spine. This correction is believed to have been done at Kunz's private expense, including not only the overprinting of the title page but also the non-standard binding; possibly such copies were used as presentations because they are rare, compared to the ordinary issues."--Gemology, by J. "A systematic description of the gemstones & ornamental materials, with properties, chemical composition, varieties, uses, and where found. The introductory matter discusses the state gemstones generally, and furnishes some information on state geology, the history of gem mining in California, and acknowledges assistance. The section on gem mines is largely a detailed description of the pegmatite deposits of Riverside & San Diego counties, and is particularly valuable because it is firsthand information, based on visits made by Kunz and with photographs that probably were taken by him or under his direction. The historical facts are particularly valuable and form much of the basic reference material upon which other authors elaborated in their writings on these mines."--Gemology, by J.
